After the loss of head Coach Mr. Colin Gay ‘93 and stand-out seniors, Andrew Wilkerson and Harold Perry, the mountain biking team are rebuilding this year. With 19 of 21 riders being new boys, the young team is looking strong.
As Head Coach, Mr. Ted Watson said, “The team is looking really good. We have a young team this year, mostly 3rd/4th formers. It is a little bit of a restart year since some of our strongest riders have graduated and with that comes enthusiasm and new energy to the team.”
While this team may lack the experience of years past, there are many riders showing strength including Pearce Fowler ‘26, Nathaniel Brewster ‘26, and Captain Stanley Kim ‘23.
The Tigers have their first race of the season on September 17th at The Miller School of Albemarle, which is a continual powerhouse in the Virginia mountain biking scene. The race course is also challenging with many more technical features not seen on other courses this fall. Their season will continue with a race at Monticello High School and conclude with one at Woodberry.
Watson is confident in the team’s ability going into the race saying, “I think the team as a whole is going to have a strong start, since we have so many young guys we will have some strong finishes in the freshman and sophomore heats.”
Kim echoed this sentiment saying that even with such a young team, “there are a lot of new kids who are pretty strong.”
It is an exciting season for the Tigers who are all pumped for their upcoming fall season.
