On Wednesday, Woodberry’s Winter Signing Day ceremony took place, celebrating nine Woodberry athletes and their commitment to play college sports. The ceremony, in Kenan Hall, was a great way to commemorate these athletes and what they have accomplished at Woodberry. 4 different sports were represented as the athletes signed to their colleges. The ceremony was packed with teachers, parents, and students celebrating the boys’ huge accomplishment. Some of the highlights of the day were the powerful speeches given by Coaches Frazier Stowers, Curtis Phillips, Craig Dawson, Jackson Matteo, and Athletic Director Matt Blundin.
For football, Armel Mukam, Rodney Lora, and Landon Ellis all signed to Division I schools. Mukam signed to Notre Dame, Lora to UNC-Chapel Hill, and Ellis to Richmond. Although Team 124’s season ended on a sour note, these boys have left an impressionable mark on the football program and the school. The track team signed off two stars, Robbie Handelsman to UPenn, and pole vaulter Sebastian Phillips to UVA. Baseball had three college signees, including Charlie Bell to Fordham, Zach Herzog to Rochester, and J.P. Sporleder to Grinnell College. Finally, basketball’s lone signee Justin Gagnon signed to Kenyon College.
Signing Day was a chance to celebrate these Tiger student athletes, and commemorate the next chapter in their lives. Congratulations to all the boys who signed Wednesday, a bright future is ahead.
