New Faculty 2023-2024

Ty Adams—

Mr. Adams rejoins the WFS faculty after spending two years teaching at Avon Old Farms in Avon, CT. He began his teaching career at WFS as a Kenan-Lewis Fellow in 2016 and received a full-time appointment to the faculty in 2018. At WFS, he taught in the history department, served as dorm head of Turner Hall, and led the Woodberry in Oxford program in 2017. He earned a B.A. in history from Appalachian State University and an M.Ed. from UVA. Mr. Adams will live in the B-Dorm tower apartment and will serve as the dorm head of the Walker Building.

Lewis Affronti—

Mr. Affronti returns to WFS for what may be an unprecedented third stint on the WFS faculty. He served as a Kenan-Lewis fellow in 2013-2014 and returned to the faculty in 2016, departing in 2022 to teach at Ensworth School in Nashville, TN. He holds a B.S. from the University of the South in Forestry and an M.Ed. from UVA. Upon his return this fall, he will teach environmental science and take the lead on environmental stewardship initiatives at WFS. Mr. Affronti will serve as dorm head on Dowd House.

Henry Brooks—

Mr. Brooks joins the Woodberry Forest Faculty after four years at the Webb School in Bell Buckle, TN, where he served as the school’s lead physics teacher and won a teaching award in 2022. Henry is a 2019 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Davidson College, where he won a scholarship for trombone performance and earned a B.S. in physics. At Woodberry, Mr. Brooks will teach physics and will live with his wife, Charis, in the Upper Dick Gym Front Apartment.

Dan Callahan—

Mr. Callahan comes to WFS from Brooks School in North Andover, MA, where he has served as the Director of Communications and Marketing for the past 17 years. He earned his J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1996 and his B.A. from Connecticut College in New London, CT, where he majored in both history and philosophy. Mr. Callahan will join the faculty at WFS as the Director of Strategic Communications and will teach journalism. He will live in the Marshall House.

Brian Campbell—

Mr. Campbell comes to WFS as a veteran teacher of English. For the past eight years, he has served as English department chair and track coach at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, VA; before VES, he taught English and history at Charlotte Country Day School in Charlotte, NC. He holds a B.A. in English and history from Bowdoin College and an MALS from Dartmouth. At Woodberry, Mr. Campbell will teach English and will live in the new Route 15 house with his wife, Sara, and his son, Owen.

Mason Galanto—

Mr. Galanto comes to Woodberry Forest from Mountain View, CA, where he has served for the past year as a math specialist at the Khan Lab School. Mason is the founder and owner of Galanto Academy, an online tutoring service, and brings extensive experience in tutoring and teaching with technology to WFS. He taught at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN, from 2017 to 2019 and earned a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. At Woodberry, Mr. Galanto will teach in the math department and live in the lower level of one of the new houses by the outdoor pool.

Bailey Hervillard—

Mrs. Hervillard has spent the last three years as the sole French teacher at Westmoreland High School in Montross, VA, where she spearheaded the creation of dual-enrollment French courses and also served as a discipline dean.  She earned a B.A. in French from Virginia Tech in 2015 and, after teaching French for two years in Tappahannock, VA, and Roanoke, VA, returned to Blacksburg for an M.A. in French, which she completed in 2019. At Woodberry, she will serve as lead French teacher and will live in the Walker Family Apartment with her husband, Romain.

Emma Hicks—

Ms. Hicks will join the admission office as an assistant director of admission. She grew up on the Mercersburg Academy campus and is a 2023 graduate of Davidson College, where she majored in Math. Ms. Hicks will help the admissions office develop and implement a new enrollment system, travel for the school, and work alongside the admissions team to enroll a new class of Tigers. She will live in the Lower Dick Gym Rear Apartment.

Julia Hixson—

Mrs. Hixson joins the college counseling office as associate director of college counseling. She comes most recently from the Covenant School in Charlottesville, VA, her alma mater, where she served for four years as director of college advising. Mrs. Hixson has taught or worked in college counseling at Covenant, the Miller School of Albemarle, and Charleston Catholic in Charleston, WV. She attended the University of Mary Washington, where she earned a B.A. in French, and Wake Forest University, where she earned an M.A. in Education. She will live in New Duplex East with her husband, Nate, and their son, Henry.

Anna Hoyt—

Ms. Hoyt comes to Woodberry Forest having recently graduated from the University of the South, where she majored in Spanish and was a member of the Order of the Gown, the university’s academic honor society. She spent the spring of 2022 studying in Madrid, Spain, and has spent several summers coaching and teaching swimming, which she will coach at WFS. At Woodberry, she will teach Spanish and will live on Lower Turner.

Michael Johnson—

Mr. Johnson joins the Woodberry faculty from Niles West High School near Chicago, IL, where he has worked as technical director in their drama department for over twenty productions and served as the auditorium manager and media technician since August 2019. At Woodberry, he will serve as technical director of the Bowman Gray Auditorium and will lead efforts campus-wide to support hands-on, project-oriented learning. He is a 2014 graduate of Western Michigan University, where he earned a B.F.A in theater design and technical production. He will live in the Lower Infirmary apartment with his wife, Erin.

Scott Michaels—

Dr. Michaels has taught engineering for the past three years at Marianapolis Preparatory School in Thompson, CT. Originally from the UK, Scott received a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Southampton, where he taught a variety of courses to undergraduate engineering students. He worked for several years as an engineer before entering the teaching profession and will take over Woodberry’s engineering program and teach ECLIPSE this year. He will live on Upper Terry.

Simon Sarkodie—

Mr. Sarkodie arrives at Woodberry from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH, where he taught English, coached soccer and basketball, and was active in creating and implementing Brewster’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programming. He has also taught at Phillips Academy’s summer session and began his teaching career at the Casady School in Oklahoma City, OK. He holds a B.A. in English from Hunter College in New York City, NY, and an M.A. in English from UVA. At Woodberry, Mr. Sarkodie will teach in the English department and live on Upper Hanes.

Taylor Tucker—

The valedictorian of the class of 2019, Mr. Tucker returns to Woodberry after a four year hiatus to earn a B.S. in computer science at Washington and Lee University, where he was a Johnson Scholar. During his time at W&L, he studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. Mr. Tucker also held several summer internships in the technology industry, was active in the W&L investment club, and served as a peer counselor. He will teach computer science and ECLIPSE at Woodberry, and he will live in the C-Dorm apartment in the Walker Building.

Truett Wason—

Also a member of the class of 2019, Mr. Wason comes back to Woodberry having recently received a B.S. in biology from Wofford College, where he served as a teaching assistant in physiology, was president of Wofford’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and spent a summer studying abroad in Genoa, Italy. He was a three-sport athlete at WFS and returns to WFS to teach biology in the science department. Mr. Wason will live in the Upper Infirmary apartment.

Gerry Wixted—

Mr. Wixted returns to WFS having spent the last two years teaching human geography and US history at Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA, where he also coached soccer and varsity basketball.  Mr. Wixted began his career as a Kenan-Lewis Fellow at WFS in 2015 and received a full-time appointment the following year; at WFS, he taught US History, an upperclass elective on the World Wars, and led the Woodberry in Oxford Program. He holds a B.A. in history from Dickinson College and a M.Ed. from UVA. He also returns to WFS as the William Stamps Farish Master in history, an honor which he was awarded in 2020. He will serve as the dorm head of Hanes Hall and will live on Lower Hanes.
