On Thursday, January 12th, 2023, Woodberry Forest hosted a touring troupe of The
Second City.
The Second City is a Chicago-based comedy cabaret that began in 1959. Apart from
nightly comedy shows, they also collaborate with corporate partners, wellness programs,
education programs, TV productions, film productions, and more. They have an extensive alumni
list, including award-winning actors, comedians, and directors. Perhaps most notable are Steve
Carell (of NBC’s The Office), Jordan Peele (of Key & Peele), Stephen Colbert (of The Late Show
with Stephen Colbert), and numerous veterans of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
The presentation that the Woodberry community attended on Thursday, “The Second
City: Out of the House Party,” featured scripted comedy sketches as well as a few improv
routines and even musical comedy.
The performance was a feature of the Kenan Artist Series. Many thanks to the series’
generous donor and to everyone that made this unique event possible.
