The Woodberry Track team has developed a reputation for incredible performances in several events. Many of the top performing athletes from last year’s team have graduated, but new and old members of the team are stepping up to ensure the teams success in the new season. Junior Jaden Ferguson, for example, believes the team has a good chance of taking state.
“It is damn near impossible to be as good as the team we had last year,” said Jaden. “But I still think we’re a good team for sure.”
Jaden participates in several events including sprints and jumps and is in his second year on Woodberry’s team. His best event is the high jump. The most exciting part about being on the team for him is the opportunity for back-to-back state championships. To get there, though, there’s still work to be done. Jaden also encourages fans doing their part in cheering and supporting the team in meets.
“I noticed… when the whole team is centered around cheering on our teammates that are competing, they do better and hit higher marks,” said Jaden “Having a higher team morale is really good for us.”
Another member of the team offered a different perspective. Junior Hunter Hueman hadn’t run track since middle school, but decided to give it a try in the off season for golf.
“I’ve gotten a lot better over the weeks we’ve been doing it,” Hunter said. “It was hard at first because you have to round that curve of running distance, but it’s going a lot better now.”
Hunter ran cross country in his freshman year, so he’s doing the long distance events for the track team. Like Jaden, Hunter is already convinced in the team’s promise in the meets to come.
“I think the guys on our team are really dedicated,” said Hunter. “It’s a great team; not much else to say.”
