Varsity Lacrosse starts strong; falls to Hoggard and SSSAS

Woodberry’s Varsity Lacrosse squad has been on a tear to start the season. The success was kicked off for the Tigers during their spring break trip. Woodberry won both of their first two games against Bishop Ireton and Benedictine by double digits, scoring 18 goals in each. After starting the season undefeated in two games, the team headed home for spring break.

The squad returned to campus 2-0 after their success over spring break and continued where they left off, beating St. Andrew’s Episcopal 10-8 in front of an exciting home crowd. Sixth Form attackmen Noah Neijna, Ben Monroe, and Smith Callaghan showed how strong and experienced the Tigers are on the offensive side of the ball. This win elevated the team to 3-0. New boy Fifth Former Hunter Rockhill has also shown great play-making ability thus far as well. Scoring the ball consistently and effectively has seemed to be the key to these wins as well as dominating the time of possession.

However, the team’s home stint rapidly took a turn as Hoggard and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes came to The Forest. Despite the Tiger’s productive offense, Woodberry Forest lost both games in front of the home crowd, 17-7 against Hoggard and 15-7 to the Saints. Against the Saints, takeaways by Sixth Former Jay O’keefe and strong defensive play from third former Jermaine Anderson proved not to be enough for Woodberry due to the Tiger’s inability to possess the ball, win faceoffs, and save shots.

Coach Leahy and the squad will be back in action and hoping to rebound from their last two losses this week against VES and Highland. Both games will be home and live streams can be found on wfspn.org as the now 3-2 Tigers will try and replicate their early success.
