This past weekend, on a gorgeous Virginia Saturday afternoon, Woodberry Forest was buzzing with activity as the first ever Woodberry-Episcopal Derby took place. The Maroon of Episcopal High School traveled here to Woodberry forest to compete in many sports on multiple levels.

Episcopal competed on two levels against the Woodberry Forest Diamond Tigers in baseball. The Woodberry varsity squad shutout Episcopal in a 2-0 victory. Chase Commander ‘21 from Jacksonville Florida pitched the shutout in his final showing against the Maroon in his career as a Tiger on the baseball field, allowing only one hit and one walk in the entire game. The JV team also competed in the afternoon with a handful of varsity players playing with them, losing to Episcopal in a modified three inning format.

Zach Herzog ‘23, the starting shortstop, spoke about what the game meant to him in his first meeting against Episcopal in baseball. “It was high intensity right from the start… We just took the field with a lot of energy,” Herzog said. “We played great defense and it was great to see Chase pitch so well against the Goons.”

The game was an all around success for the Varsity team and was also a great day at all levels of Woodberry athletics. There is no remedy for missing The Game due to COVID, yet the derby against the Maroon did more than most could have asked for on both sides of the rivalry. After their win the Diamond Tigers will continue their season with a chance for revenge this Friday against St. Christopher’s school, an undefeated team.
