Winter Track (1972)

Written for the Oracle in 1972

The Winter Track team post a 3-1 record for the first half of the season. The team has scored victories in dual meets over Blue Ridge 75-34 and Lane 60-49. The defeat came in a tri-meet with Thomas Jefferson and Washington-Lee, with Woodberry finishing 16 points behind T.J. and 5 points ahead of W-L.

As usual, head coach Dave Bloor’s long distance men have pulled sweeps continually in the two mile, with Bynum Merrit leading, followed by Doug Clark, and Richard Hildebrandt. Although Coach Bloor has a strong pack of distance runners this season, he feels that none of them have reached their best times.

The most impressive meet was Woodberry’s victory over Blue Ridge after only two weeks of winter training. The team, led by co-captains Wayne Williams and Doug Clark, scored sweeps in the two mile, mile, 880, long jump and high jump. Individual highlights this year include Wayne Williams’ 20-10 ¾ long jump, Sandy Finch’s 5-9 high jump, and David Swaim’s 5.7 seconds in the 50 yard dash.

The relay teams have not lived up to the expectations of sprint coach Evans. The 880 relay team has been disqualified twice due to bad handoffs. The mile relay has been hampered by the illness of Alex Peterson and Roger Schweikert. With the three meets left in the year, the team should improve and end the winter season successfully.
