On Thursday, November 2nd, the student body gathered in Bowman Gray Auditorium for the ninth Thursday morning assembly of the school year.
Mr. Alexander opened the assembly with the weekly moment of silence, then turned the podium over to David Mabe, a college counselor and head of this year’s summer fellowship programs.
Mr. Mabe outlined the four separate programs, which includes:
- The Class of 2008 Service Fellowship, in which the fellow will receive grants for community service work;
- The Grills Fellowship, a program by which an interested student may receive grants to pursue an interest in government or history;
- The Kenan Arts Scholars Program, where interested students may receive grants to study or work in the visual and performing arts;
- The Noland Fellowship, which awards a grant to just one student a summer who may pursue an independent research project.
Mr. Mabe introduced Guy Wall ’18 to the stage to speak about his summer experience in Sri Lanka as a Class of 2008 Service Fellow. Beginning in sophomore year, Wall began to take an interest in religions outside of Christianity, particularly Buddhism and Hinduism. During his junior year, he seized the opportunity that the Class of 2008 Service Fellowship presented and proposed a trip to Sri Lanka to help rebuild temples.
