On Thursday, October 12th, the student body met in the Bowman Gray Auditorium for the seventh Thursday morning assembly of the school year.
Mr. Ryan Alexander opened, per usual, with a brief moment of quiet before introducing Mr. Tim Stakem, Director of Instrumental Music. Mr. Stakem said that he was excited to use the weekly Thursday assemblies as an opportunity to showcase the talented and diverse music department at Woodberry, and took a moment to talk about the Jazz Band’s first song, “Green Onions.” The song was first written by Booker T. and the M.G.’s in the 1960’s, and has long been one of the most recognizable tunes in jazz and rock.
After performing “Green Onions” – which they did quite well – Mr. Stakem introduced the band’s second song, “Backlash.” The song is another staple of ’60’s jazz and rock, and the Jazz Band put on yet another solid show.
Mr. Alexander retook the stage to close the meeting with the weekly recital of “A Boy’s Prayer.”
