A Day in the Life of a Cheerleader

Robert Singleton ’16

One of the few remaining traditions at Woodberry that some students love and some just like is that of the cheerleaders. For those unaware, each year through a tight-lipped process, a group of boys is chosen by the previous cheerleaders to head up pep rallies and foster school spirit. When they are not in the spotlight behind the Dick Gym or down on the football field, the cheerleaders can be found chilling on Griffin, watching the Panthers game, or chowing down at the Fir Tree. I caught up with senior cheerleader, Parker Jones of Hailey, Idaho to get his take on his coveted position here at Woodberry. He was, of course, wearing his orange “WFS Cheerleaders” hat and some fresh New Balances with a Mountain Dew in his hand. When asked if he expected to be a cheerleader his response, which he delivered with a smirk on his face, was surprising. “Duh I expected it. I mean someone with my prestige and charisma is a shoe-in for a position like this.”

We all get excited the night of a pep rally, but I do not think anyone gets as excited as Parker does. He gave me a rundown of his day leading up to his twenty minutes of fame on stage behind the Dick Gym. According to Parker, his day goes as follows…

-I wake up at 7:58 to my alarm of “Party Up” by DMX.

-I grab a scooter and whip it to class while repping my orange hat backwards.

-If lunch is good, I cut everybody strictly on the basis that they better know who I am.

-PF rolls around, more DMX, add pre-workout, get huge gains to fill out my jumpsuit. Whaddup EHS girls

-Flash forward to study hall – no work being done; I’m already in my jumpsuit watching past bonfire highlights.

-Around 9:20 I am on my way back to Griff (Griffin Dorm).

-Now I’m with the boys and we are painting faces and getting pumped up to DMX.

-Finally, when I am up on stage and those lights come on, I am ready to rock.

Sadly, pep rallies have come to a close this fall, but Parker looks forward to one last hurrah at The Bonfire. Everyone is looking forward to what his jokes will be and he is spending the entire week focusing on getting pumped up for the big night. Parker sums himself up with a few words to leave our readers with, “Basically, I think of myself as a rule breaker, a chick magnet, and a mad dog chill bro. Go Tigers, baby.”
